Early Season change (Super El nino year)

The change of tropical seasons from dry (winter) to "wet" season seems to have come early this year.

The "build up", hot humid heat began around mid October, but it only lasted a few days (normally it lasts for several months, until Christmas-New year!) Then cooler SE winds again and first rains on 16th October, followed by overcast showers around (Tasman blocking high, altered jet stream winds) Then it's turned to (humid) northerlies for a week, we got a good soaking on early 24th October - 40mm overnight in my area (with some 70-100mm's north of us).

On "Vessel finder" AIS app, there is a mass migration of yachts heading south again. They are departing North Queensland waters and sailing fast with moderate beam to quartering winds down to at least SE Queensland latitudes to escape the coming cyclone season (and for boat insurance). It's a good week to sail south. Normally moderate to strong dryseason SE trades make any southern progress difficult for keel yachts and large multihulls for at least 6 months per year. (Never a problem for trailer sailers on the highways)

Yachts are also sailing south from South Pacific Islands to NZ, Oct 2026.

So far the super El Nino has created cooler weather here in Townsville. Out west and down south, severe thunderstorm cells are forming every day, then they move towards the east coast. In these areas the storms are causing some flash flooding and property damage. Townsville's solid rain morning was the dying tailend of one these cells. (Most of them are stopping about 100km inland, eg Charters Towers city).
